NHK Special: Brown Bears Living in a Sea of Unpredictable Change

First broadcast date: NHK General, May 31st (Sunday), 9:00 PM - 9:49 PM

In Shiretoko, a World Natural Heritage site, changes are quietly but surely spreading. The rapid warming of the Sea of Okhotsk is causing a decrease in drift ice, and the cycle of life connecting the sea and the forest is beginning to break down. Pink salmon are disappearing, and the Hokkaido deer population is increasing. The effects are also being felt by brown bears, which are at the top of the ecosystem.

I participated in the summer brown bear filming segment of the TV show "Darwin Comes to Town." We covered the current state of Shiretoko, where the brown bears are gradually changing their behavior as the environment undergoes drastic changes.
